World Down Syndrome Awareness 2026

Today is World Down Syndrome Awareness Day.

The 21st day of the third month every year, represents a triplication of the 21st chromosome.

I have learnt so much over the last 17 years, since I became mum to my Captain Amalaka, as he likes to be known (aka Captain America). When I heard the words "he has trisomy", I would never have thought I would ever celebrate this day, if I am honest. The grief and utter terror of what lay ahead of us chased me for longer than it should have.

Now I know 100%, without question, that I would not be the person I am without him. It's not always an easy road, and at the moment, the world seems to be moving backwards rather than forwards for the inclusion of people like him. But I learn new life lessons all the time, and he surprises me every day with what he can do and what he understands. The only grief I have now is that others don't see him and his qualities and capabilities. Or choose not to.

Amalaka lessons:

💡 Never underestimate others' abilities.

💡 Empathy enriches your view of the world, for the better. Be kind.

💡 ALWAYS start a conversation with strangers. This has opened so many avenues for him.

💡 We all have dreams to fulfil, and I totally believe in him, and I will help him achieve those dreams.

💡 Let no one stand in the way.
